Importance of predatory infauna in marine soft-sediment communities

چکیده

Ambrose (1984a) suggested that a 3-way interactive model should be applied to marine infaunal communities having the levels of epibenttuc predators, predatory infauna and nonpredatory infauna. It is shown that the 3-level interactive model incorporates the implicit, unstated assumption that epibenthlc predators preferentially prey on predatory infauna. A review of the literature reveals that this assumption is not true. The assumption of predatory infauna being more susceptible to epibenthic predation is challenged. Reanalysis of the caging studies analyzed by Ambrose with a more ngorous and conservative classification of predatory and nonpredatory lnfauna provides no support for the proposed model. The application of the proposed 3-level interactive model to marine infaunal communities is not justified.

Competition and Predation in Marine Soft-sediment Communities

One of the major goals of community ecology is to understand how interactions among the resident organisms affect their distribution and abundance. For terrestrial and rocky intertidal communities competition and predation clearly can play pivotal roles in community organization (28, 47, 84). The importance of biological processes in organizing marine soft-sediment communities is not as well un...

Differential regulatory roles of crustacean predators in a sub-arctic, soft-sediment system

The role of predation in structuring soft-sediment communities varies as a function of the number and composition of predators that co-occur in a given habitat. In Bonne Bay, Newfoundland, contrasting abundances or predators in different areas of the bay may contribute to different regulatory roles of predators on infauna. To test this hypothesis, results from a field exclusion experiment were ...

Distribution and Paleoecology of the Middle Jurassic Foraminifera from Eastern Alborz (Goznawwi section)

Analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages was performed in Callovian deposits of the Farsian Formation Northeastern Alborz; Iran. The sequence of Callovian at the Goznawwi area consists mainly of soft marls , which contain high-diversity calcareous assemblages. In this foraminiferal succession nine morphogroups were differentiated according to shell architecture (general shape, mode of coil...

Contrasting macrobenthic activities differentially affect nematode density and diversity in a shallow subtidal marine sediment

By bioturbating and bio-irrigating the sea floor, macrobenthic organisms transport organic matter and oxygen from the surface to deeper layers, thereby extending the habitat suitable for smaller infauna. Next to these engineering activities, competition, disturbance and predation may also affect the spatial distribution of these smaller organisms. In a controlled laboratory experiment, we studi...

Man-Made Structures on Marine Sediments: Effects on Adjacent Benthic Communities

This study (1975-1977) examines the effect of man-made structures on natural sand bottom communities in shallow water in San Diego County, southern California, USA. While there were shallow scour effects to 15 m around some artificial reefs, the reefs had no measurable effect on sand ripple patterns, grain size, organic carbon or infauna beyond the scoured areas. Foraging by reef-associated fis...
